How we Rear our Kittens

All our kittens are born in our home, normally in our bedroom where the mum feels warm and safe. We always supervise births and our queens are quite happy for us to do this, and to help if necessary. We do not cage our queens prior to birth at all, we are fortunate that our cats mostly get along very well with each other, and the mum-to-be is not worried by the presence of other cats - the others usually choose to keep out of the way in any case. We handle all kittens immediately after birth to check for problems and to determine the sex (that's easiest to do immediately while they are still wet). When all births are complete we make sure that the queen is warm and comfortable, offer food and water and leave the happy family together.

For the first 3 weeks or so very little needs to be done other than changing the bedding regularly and most important, handling the kittens frequently. This is just holding and gentle stroking, which the mother does not object to at all. In fact it has been proven in studies that frequent handling of kittens is vital for their socialisation and the most critical period is between 2 and 8 weeks of age. We find that our kittens always have the most wonderful affectionate temperaments so this regular handling certainly does make a difference.

At between 3 and 4 weeks of age the kittens are usually very alert, trying to climb out of their box and starting to play with each other, so it's time for the big move downstairs! The family is moved to a large kitten pen in our kitchen, right in the heart of the household where they can see everything that goes on and get used to the washing machine, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner etc. They only stay in the pen for about a week and then they are off and exploring, getting underfoot and generally creating havoc. By 6 weeks old the kittens are starting to use the litter tray, and have usually started eating solid food. We try to get them accustomed to a varied diet with proportions of canned, fresh raw and cooked meat, and dried kitten food. At this stage we start them on a homoeopathic "vaccination" regime using a feline combination which protects against all the major feline diseases. Hopefully by the time they receive their regular vaccinations starting at about 10 weeks, they already have some immunity.

How do I Purchase a Kitten?

Firstly you should email us or phone on 01355-903109 to discuss a possible visit for you to meet us, our cats and kittens.  When you visit,  you get the chance to chat with us, play with the kittens and get an idea of how they might fit into your home.  If at the end of the vist we are all happy with the idea of you having a kitten (or two perhaps!),  then we normally ask for a deposit so that your chosen kitten(s)  is/are reserved for you. Alternatively if you wish to go away and think about things,  we are quite happy with that as well,  but in that case no kittens are firmly reserved.   The deposit is fully refundable,  unless you change your mind within one week of collection of the kitten(s),  in which case we will only refund a proportion.  We do not advertise our kitten prices here;  our prices are in the average UK range for the breeds that we work with.  The vast majority of our kittens are sold as pets and are therefore registered not for breeding.  To ensure that they are neutered before reaching breeding age,  we ask new owners to sign a sales agreement which can be viewed here.  We do not provide the registration documents until we receive proof of neutering,  unless the kitten is to be shown by the new owners, in which case it is preferable if he/she is registered in their name.  Please also take a look at the GCCF Code of Ethics for Breeders and Owners,  which we follow.
